Organizations face a never-ending challenge: Deliver uninterrupted
and secure access to vital applications and information in
a world that sees platforms, applications and devices constantly
changing.
Servers are the heart of the network. However, there is nothing
mysterious about them for they are merely beefed up PCs that
distribute data among several PCs. The two biggest requirements
with a server is its need to be running 24/7 and protection
of data.
Every one of our servers, whether it is an HP/Compaq, IBM,
Dell or Clone comes with some kind of fault tolerance from
simple software mirroring to hardware RAID 5.
We are now almost entirely a Microsoft NT/Windows 2000 shop,
though we have configured some Novell and Linux servers in
the past.
Microsoft’s appeal to small businesses with their server
software is due to the software’s amazing combination
of versatility, reliability and ease of use.
We have seen too many times where clients think they need
to spend a small fortune for a server. We educate them by
pointing out that the server acts more like a traffic cop
than a weight lifter. We are big believers of distributed
processing, for it is better to have several smaller servers
doing specialized functions that one big server doing everything.
When problems happen, it is better that they affect one certain
area of operations rather than the entire network.
